NEW YORKERS IN LOVE

Whilst perusing the New Yorker site (which I do aw the time cos I'm so cultured and that) I noticed the cute cover illustration - New Yorkers in Love - by Luci Gutiérrez.

I don't know why but there's something very Love Story about these two, no? I can't recall if Ali MacGraw actually wears a beret in Love Story (my heart and fuzzy memory says she does) but still, it's a sweet image.

The New Yorker ran a wee feature on it, including a few pictures of similar cover illustrations from the 1920s which were so cool I had to share em...

My favourite is the sailor and floozy - ooft!

Not convinced about this last one but I guess you could argue the couple in love here are the two in the foreground having A TOTAL LOL.

Anyways, d'awwwww! 20s New York, I'd like to be in you.

JANUARY JONES' BEST COVERS

This post is definitely more than a little creepy but y'all probably know by now how much I absolutely adore January Jones (ultimate girl crush) and I've been promising a "why I love Jan Jones" post for ages so consider this the first installment.

Reason 1: She never does a bad cover. Ever.

BOOBS.

This last one is more than a little racy for a dreary Monday morning, but hells, LOOK AT THE RACK ON THAT! Fierce.

Plus, as Betty Draper, you've gotta admire her parenting style...

CLAIRE DANES FOR ASOS MAGAZINE

Some of you may well have seen this editorial when the May edition of ASOS Magazine popped through your letterbox this morning but I couldn't NOT post it here since Claire is my number 1 homegurl LIKE YOU DIDN'T ALL ALREADY KNOW (I only mention her in like every second post afterall...)

I'm thrilled to see 32-year-old Claire representing what I've always considered to be a very young, teen-targeted retailer like ASOS. Clearly still on her Homeland promo run, this latest editorial shows her at her best, looking relaxed, confident and radiant, and the accompanying interview - while not exactly ground-breaking - works well as a charming introduction for younger folk unfamiliar with her general awesomeness. I wish they hadn't made her talk about TOWIE though. She's cool and relevant enough without shoe-horning that pointless quip in.

Styling wise I would have changed up that first tank top in the cover shot though, and maybe replaced it with something floral...? Not into that motif thing. But other than that the looks are spot on, especially the hair and makeup.

KATY PERRY COVERS INTERVIEW MAGAZINE

KABLAMO!

I mean, yes, she looks smokin' hot, mainly because they've completely changed her entire look so much that it's hard to tell who it even is (no bad thing, I am NOT digging the blue hair stage at the moment. There's just something really UNCOOL about her that I can't put my finger on) HOWEVER, what excites me most about this sneak peek of the March cover is the bit where it says SARAH BURTON BY SARAH JESSICA PARKER.

Let's absorb.

Can you even imagine how good that interview will be? We all know SJP was the late, great Lee McQueen's close friend and ambassador for the brand - she can still pull off a McQueen on the red carpet like no one else - so I have massive expectations for this interview. Plus, she's funny, warm and witty and if anyone can coax the notoriously shy Burton out her shell, it's Carrie. Wait... SJP. Same difference, RIGHT?

Ooooh, I can't wait!

LANA DEL REY: MARCH VOGUE UK COVER

Hmmm...

I know SO many people will be falling over themselves to say how beautiful she looks, and she does, but is anyone else kind of sick of having her shoved in their face?

Right now the PR campaign for Miss Del Rey is about as subtle as a ten-ton truck. Despite the album being resolutely panned pretty much everywhere, it seems we (and Vogue) are more than willing to over-look that because, AW, SHE'S SO PRETTY!

Whaddya think?

DAKOTA FANNING FEBRUARY UK ELLE COVER

OK, so this is a shameless reblog, but I can't stop looking at how beautiful Dakota fanning is on the February subscriber's cover of Elle UK...

Those matte, velvety pink lips and nails are to die for, no?

I've always loved Dakota Fanning's look. Although younger sister Elle is classically more model-esque, Dakota's features are interesting, and there's just something about her face that draws me in...

Definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for this when it hits the shops.

WONDERFUL WONDERLAND

The latest issue of Wonderland magazine was launched on Friday with four of the best covers I've seen in a long LONG time.

They've been known to feature some pretty awesome/controversial/unexpected peeps on their cover including Katie Price, Alexandra Burke, Zac Efron, Tyler the Creator, Alexander Sarsgaard and Janet Jackson, but this time it's the turn of Uber-hip indie princess Lana Del Rey to join models Charlotte Free, Meghan Collison and Jesse Shannon.

BUT, which is your favourite?



Personally I'm struggling to choose between Lana and Charlotte's covers. Whaddya reckon, they're both dynamite, no?

I really like Wonderland magazine, y'all. I've mentioned it before when talking about the editorial Cher Lloyd did for them a while back and about Chloe Moretz's cover a while before that... But also it's just an all-round good mag.

Interesting, informative, fun, fashion-forward, but at the same time I don't feel like I'm being beaten around the face with COOLNESS (Vice, I'm looking at you), nor do I feel talked down to or patronised. Basically, I like the content AND the covers. Pick it up if you see it out and about, innit.

STELLA TENNANT FOR VOGUE ITALIA

Whilst in Venice last month, I picked myself up that iconic style bible that is Vogue Italia. Not just any old Vogue Italia, but the SEPTEMBER ISSUE of Vogue Italia. How many more times can I say Vogue Italia?

Anyway, Obviously it was the best 5 Euros I've ever spent in my puff! Absolutely massive, really more like a book than a magazine, it's totally packed to the rafters with the most stunning ads, editorials and features you've ever seen. Seriously.

None more so than the cover editorial of British model Stella Tennant channelling Ethel Granger - the woman who held the record for the smallest waist in the world - shot by Steven Meisel.

More ART than anything else, the collection of photos entitled The Discipline of Fashion are disturbing at first but ultimately I found them fascinating and beautiful. Now, I can't get enough of them:

Wait!! DON'T FREAK OUT like I did at first... Stella's waist isn't actually THAT tiny (though it is still really small) - it was actually photoshopped later to resemble Ethel's 13-incher. Ouchies!

What do you guys reckon about these photos. Creepy or strangely beautiful? I would never have said I was into extreme body-modification or whatevs, but something about the discipline and sheer determination taken to create this freaky look is pretty impressive. Respect.

I ACTUALLY LIKE ALEXA

..on the October cover of Harper's Bazaar.

She features as BOTH the UK and Australian cover girl this month, and I'm seriously loving these pics so much more than I expected to:

I always think she photographs really samey and bland and I'm usually just NOT into her look (trying too hard to look like you haven't tried at all much?) BUT I have to admit she's gorgeous here! The decison to go for a darker crop has been the best move ever!

The only niggling thing is that the Australian cover seems really summery - I reckon this shot could be a June or July cover as it's making me think of hot sweaty days in the park rather than the onslaught of Autumn. The cool 60s vibe of the UK cover seems far more season-appropriate, no? ***

But whatever, they are both stunning. Bravo Chungy, I'm a convert. FOR NOW...

***Oh my GOD I've just realised what an eejit I am! Obviously in Australia October IS summer! Gahhhd, pretty sure that's the definition of an epic fail. Anyhoos, with that in mind, this is a perfect high-summer cover. SMASHED IT.

LOLITA LOVE

LOVE, the twice yearly fashion bible magazine known for it's multiple covers (and for featuring THAT kiss between Kate Moss and Lea T for their Androgyny issue) is again releasing several cover editions of its 6th issue - the Supernatural issue.

Promising 432 pages of discipline, obsession and desire, there's something distinctly Lolita-esq and Virgin Suicides-ey (eloquence personified, people) about the romanticised images of the three cover stars...

Hollywood teens of the moment Elle Fanning, Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld ALL look divine...ladies, dry those tears, you're beeeeeeutiful!

Personally, my favourite is Chloe Moretz's shot. The only closeup of the trio packs a definite punch - her expression is dead on, Tyra would be so proud - and those wee horns, what are they all about? Who cares, I love it. Can I just HAVE your hair Chloe?

VOGUE UK JUNE COVER

Alexa Chung covers next month's Vogue UK:

..I'm underwhelmed.

I hate to admit it, since I'm bound to get a lynching from her vast army of followers, but I'm not usually Alexa's biggest fan anyway, and this lacklustre cover just seals the deal. One. Trick. Pony.

Firstly, I DO like the Erdem dress, pendant and darker hair on Alexa - it's a grown up, classy look and frankly I'm just happy to see her out of her old battered brouges and tatty blazer combo which is normally her scruffy uniform. It's a very "English Rose" style and I've always felt she looks far better when channeling a feminine aesthetic like this...

But yet again it's the same gamine, coquettish look we've all seen ten million times before. I REALLY dislike her expression in this shot - she looks like she seriously can't be arsed, and the crossed arms add to that almost petulant attitude. Her cheekbone and collarbones seem really defined too - perhaps too much retouching? It reminds me of Lady Gaga in Born This Way. Plus, that weird sort of half-smirk?

Hate to hate but... Nah. I just don't dig it. Am I chatting mince? Tell me!

KATE WINSLET - VOGUE UK APRIL COVER

Still at my work experience this week, and loving it more and more with every day, but missing having the time to blog about LOADS of relevant things that keep cropping up in the world of fashion... How flingin-flangin inconvenient that the world doesn't revolve around me, eh?

AAANYWAY part of my job at the beeb is to collect cuttings from the daily papers on arts/culture stories that might be of relevance. While doing that very thing this morning I came across photo's from Kate Winslet's Mario Testino shoot for April's Vogue and jotted down (on my hand no less) WINSLET/VOGUE/BLONDE lest I forget to post on it when I had a spare second. I think it was in The Independent or The Telegraph, I'm not sure now...

Without further ado, here is the cover in all its STUNNING GLORY (courtesy of Coco's Tea Party who beat me to it. As usual. That girl is always one step ahead!)

WOWZERS, right? I was totally blown away! I don't think Kate has ever looked so beautiful, sporting this BOLD colour and cut - particularly apt cover title then...

Channeling Michelle Williams' gamine, bleached crop definitely works for Kate... in an editorial sense anyway. Can't lie though, it DOES make me nervous as a look for "real life" but for a fashion editorial, this hairdo is on the freakin' money.

Anyway, have a look at the article if you can (sorry I can't be more specific where I saw it, defo Independent or Telegraph) as it showed a few other looks from the shoot as well as the cover. She truly photographs stunningly. Mario Testino, you utter genius, you.
 
Also, ageless much? Seriously, Kate, your a grade A babe.
