SCOTTISH BALLET: THE RITE OF SPRING AND ELITE SYNCOPATIONS

“An evening of tremendous contrast” is how it was billed, and BOY, they weren’t freaking kidding. From the choice of a shot of black Sambucca or a flute of pink Champagne when we arrived, the scene was set for a game of two very different halves.

First up Christopher Hampson’s brutal Rite of Spring. I was not prepared.

I should have been though, because I was chatting with Ann from Scottish Ballet before curtain up (while shamelessly gorging on giant pretzels) and she warned me that Rite would most likely make me feel “sick, but in a good way.” I don’t know about the good way bit, but I definitely felt a bit queasy by the end.

I don’t mind admitting that the story was, at first, confusing. Two brothers awaken and seem to frolic around, spending a lot of time chasing each other and stopping to pray or perform rituals or “rites.” From the outset it’s clear that one brother is obviously more in control than the other, but then all of a sudden something changes, and some serious shit goes down.

Hampson’s set is like a concave padded cell, cut off disturbingly half way up the wall creating an uncomfortably low ceiling so as to heighten the claustrophobia. The lack of scenery and context makes the brutal shift in atmosphere all the more disturbing. Things between the brothers get violent. Terrifying. Tragic. And Stravinsky’s relentless score only adds to the tension.

It’s a beautiful but painful assault on the senses. There are some horrible scenes that make it hard to watch – at times it felt to me like the younger brother was less a human and more a tortured animal in a cage – but it’s lifted into enjoyment by incredible choreography. If ever you forget the huge physical and emotional toll ballet takes, Rite will remind you.

After all that, with the audience still reeling, it was time for Elite Syncopations – something just about as far away from the previous billing as I think it’s possible to get.

In Kenneth MacMillan’s romp, the whole company appear on stage in a kind of 1900s music hall, decked out in psychedelic body-skimming costumes by designer Ian Spurling, each one hand-painted and patterned with arrows, or stars and stripes, buttons or bows. The effect is clown like, but just on this side of ridiculous.

A real 12-piece band also appears on stage in the background, similarly outfitted, playing ragtime classics by Scott Joplin and his contemporaries, and it’s a welcome change which really brings the music hall atmosphere to life. There’s a party happening on stage and I want to go.

There was no “story” as such this time, but plenty of LOL moments as the colourful characters flirted with each other and competed for the limelight, with the breathtaking skill of making it all look so bloomin easy.

We took along with us a ballet virgin last night, and I can’t think of a more perfect double bill than this by way of an introduction. Both sides of the ballet coin are expertly and beautifully represented here – one piece haunting, brutal and affecting, the other funny, engaging and uplifting.

The Rite of Spring and Elite Syncopations is on at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow for tonight and tomorrow night only and tickets are still available here: http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/autumn-2013/the-rite-of-spring-and-elite-syncopations.html

I can’t urge you strongly enough to go. GO!

HIGHLAND FLING

On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of Scottish Ballet's latest production - Highland Fling.

Originally produced in 1994 by Olivier Award winning choreographer Matthew Bourne and presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Highland Fling is a wonderfully imaginative reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide with a wickedly wry Scotch twist.

"Highland Fling follows the antics of James – a young Scot with sex and love and rock and roll on his mind.  Recently married to his beloved Effie, his addiction to excess finds him in the fateful company of a beguiling gothic fairy.  As his love for the strange and beautiful sylph becomes an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond reality and reason."

I have to say, this was MAYBE my favourite Scottish Ballet production I've seen thus far. Bold statement but it really was brilliant.

I took the bf and, as it was his first time, I was a little worried he might be left twiddling his thumbs towards the end. Though he's a fairly cultured sort of guy (ROFFLE), ballet isn't for everyone and in a packed, warm Theatre Royal it's easy to become fidgety and restless if you're not totally engrossed by the story/choreography.

Happily though, we both loved it. In particular, Scottish references like the Rangers and Celtic adornments in the council flat backdrop, and the wee auld granny getting right into the festivities in her mobility scooter tickled wur funny bones something awful. But there was a nice contrast in the second half as it became decidedly darker, taking a turn for the macabre with copious amounts of fake blood and a haunting pas de deux that almost brought a tear to the eye, helped in no small measure by the SEVERAL red wines consumed during the interval...

Overall it was the perfect introduction to ballet for a novice, and a refreshing break from the classics for myself. Funny, imaginative and engaging, one not to miss FOR SURE.

Plus, it was a great excuse to dress up on a Saturday and make a night of it. I got to wear my fab new bright orange stilettos...

...while bf stuck to the Scottish theme with his trusty Harris Tweed jacket. Lol at it getting a sneaky AIR OOT beforehand!

(This was by far the classiest thing we did all weekend, Sunday being spent mooching around Primark, and consuming Pop Tarts and Pez in front of the tellybox. Oooft!)

SCOTTISH BALLET PRESENTS: THE NUTCRACKER

Based on ETA Hoffmann's classic tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, this classic ballet (scored by Tchaikovsky) is back at the Theatre Royal and touring the country this Christmas thanks to Scottish Ballet, and I literally COULD NOT be more excited!

I've talked loads about Scottish Ballet in the past, waxing lyrical about the amazing Alice in Wonderland and discussing at length the sumptuous costumes in The Sleeping Beauty, and while those were out-of-this-world, I feel like I've been waiting for YEARS for SB to roll out The Nutcracker again, as it's my absolute all-time favourite.

My mum first took me to see it in Glasgow back when I was in Primary school - it was my first ever live ballet and I was instantly hooked! That performance sparked a life-long obsession with both ballerinas (remember my Darcey Bussell phase, Maw?) AND the story. I mean, it's got everything - Christmas eve, toys, a handsome prince, a magical dolls house, an evil governess, mouse baddies, sword-fights, SUGAR PLUM FAIRIES, candy canes...

Stunning photos, right?!

It's not just the dream-like quality of the festive story and score which makes me love this ballet above all others, but I'm sure the nostalgia of having seen it as a child and playing the video of the Warner Bros film over and over has helped me feel so fond of it.

Seriously, anyone else remember this film?!

Ballet fanatics among you may well have sussed that after The Sleeping Beauty last year and now with The Nutcracker, Scottish Ballet have tackled two of the notorious Tchaikovsky triple - the third being Swan Lake. If I were a betting woman I'd stake money on that being next year's shout... Although I suppose it's not particularly festive, or massively CHEERY either, but a girl can dream, right?

Touring dates are below and tickets are available to book online now. Honestly, go and see it if you get the chance!

Theatre Royal, Glasgow 8 – 29 December 2012
Festival Theatre, Edinburgh 8 – 12 January 2013
His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen 16 – 19 January 2013
Eden Court Theatre, Inverness 23 - 26 January 2013
Grand Opera House, Belfast
Theatre Royal, Newcastle 6 - 9 February 2013

SCOTTISH BALLET: THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

Yesterday, after yet another day of pampering at Blythswood Spa and a humongous curry for tea, my friend Jenna and I trotted along to the Theatre Royal to indulge in Scottish Ballet's winter offering - the sumptuous spectacular that is The Sleeping Beauty. I've talked about my love for the ballet before and this time I was thrilled to be given the chance to wax lyrical to my heart's content in a wee article for the programme:

This isn't sad at all...

Back in October I was invited along to Scottish Ballet's southside HQ to investigate the painstaking costuming process involved in a grand production like The Sleeping Beauty, and found that heaven DOES exist in the huge warehouse-style hangar that is the wardrobe department. If you have a spare five mins gie it a read - click on the pictures to enlarge:

It truly was an amazing show. The 1940s costumes in Act III looked stunning contrasted with the earlier extravagance of the late Regency gowns. My favourite costume was Auroras when she has her first proper dance with the Prince after she awakes... It's just a simple, light and airy white dress (almost like Victorian undergarments) but it looked so elegant and innocent, especially with her hair down, dancing such a beautiful, romantic duet.

I also loved the other four princesses dresses, and especially enjoyed seeing them updated for Act III - for example, Snow White's traditional fairytale gown was transformed into a smart navy and white skirt-suit with a quirky poisoned apple-shaped fascinator!

The Lilac Fairy was my favourite dancer of the night. Unrivalled fluidity and grace - gobsmackingly good.

The baddies.

Aurora and her pals.

One of the many fairies who bless Aurora at her Christening.

All in all, yet another smashing success from Scottish Ballet. If you fancy going along, and WHY wouldn't you, booking details can be found here.

BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT: SELF CONSTRUCTED FREAK

Today my blogger spotlight falls squarely on the wonderfully-quirky Marlena from Self Constructed Freak...

I first became aware of Marlena after reading her cute collar tutorial over at Rookie mag...Yes, I KNOW it's an online magazine  (started by Tavi from Style Rookie - hero) for teenage girls and I haven't been a teenager for FIVE YEARS (omg) but everything about it invites me in. The content, the articles, the styling, the photos, the guest bloggers... WHY didn't this exist when I was 15?

Anyway, so Marlena was one of Rookie's awesome guest bloggers a while back and I've been creeping on her insane, grungy, teen-witchy, girly, pastel-gothy style ever since. Here's why I love her:

Here she is as Roy Lichtenstein's old school comic strip Crying Girl for Halloween. I mean, that's just RAD.

Pink eyebrows much? Hell yeah!

One of the best put-together outfits I've seen in a long LONG time. Every single detail is perfect!

The things I would do for this T-Shirt...

80s-eyes-tastic.

I rest my case.

I don't know about you guys but when I'm creeping on personal style blogs I always get so much more pleasure out of ones where the blogger has a really strong, statement, individual style that can't easily be copied by the masses. Of course, I do also like the ones where the gal is decked out head to toe in designer/highstreet finery purely for the lust factor, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE blogs like Marlena's for genuine style inspiration. These pics make my heart happy. Or something less cheesy. But, yeah...

Definitely go check her, AND Rookie out. Maybe you'll find it appeals to your inner emo-girl teenager as much as it appeals to mine. Which is A LOT.

Also, Scottish folk, if you're planning on attending Scottish Ballet's winter spectacular - The Sleeping Beauty - keep your eyes peeled for a wee article in the programme written by yours truly. Don't want to give too much away so I will leave it as cryptic as that for now...

Oh, AND, if you're out and about in St Enochs, Buchanan Galleries, Princes Sq, Silverburn or pretty much any Glasgow shopping centre, remember to pick up a copy of the recently-rebranded UK Beauty Guide... Here's a sneak peek of my article:

Check me, pure banging on about trends like I know what I'm on aboot!

BALLET AND BLOGGERS - TAKE TWO!

Phew, what a day Saturday was! I feel like I've come back down to earth with an almighty BUMP and I don't like it one bit - can I just live at the Blythswood Square Hotel, dress as the white rabbit every day and pirouette my way through life please?

I'm actually not having an(other) episode, simply referring to my day out on Saturday at the Scottish Bloggers event with Scottish Ballet.

I'm so late posting this, loads of the girls who were there have already been on raving about it - and rightly so - not to labour the point but it was SERIOUSLY fantastic!

The day started at 11:30am at the fabulous Blyhswood Square Hotel (the only AA 5* hotel in Glasgow doncha know!) but I was typically a bit late so had to burst in, red-faced and peching like a goon. Cool move...

After a screening of a short film about Alice, we were taken back through to the Monte Carlo suite for a delicious afternoon tea and lashings of bubbly, accompanied by a demonstration of a ballet-eque up do by stylists from Rainbow Rooms International.

mmm! And hey Ayden and Claire, I see you!

Afterwards we had the chance to get our hair done by the ladies from RRI, hand massages courtesy of the spa at the Blythswood, and our makeup touched up by Jane from Smujj.

Claire indulges in some fabulous red lippy!

Check out Amanda's gorgeous gaga-inspired bow hairdo! REEM!! (must stop saying reem at every opportunity...)

Kirsten gets her paws- I mean HANDS massaged...
(Thanks to Amanda for letting me pinch her photatoes)

I honestly can rave enough about how awesome this part of the day was! Leon from the spa at Blythswood Square was lovely and made sure all 22 of us were totally taken care of - nothing was too much bother :)

Next it was on to the main event - Scottish Ballet's latest spring offering: ALICE!

Like Cinderella at Christmas, Alice is no ordinary imagining of Lewis Carroll's nonsensical romp of a children's story. Instead of a rabbit hole, Alice falls through the lens of a camera into Wonderland, which is actually a lavish and sometimes-creepy representation of Charles Dodgson(AKA Lewis Carroll)'s mind.

In terms of the flow of the story, I felt that Alice followed a much less linear plot than Cinderella. Her awesome, dream-like interactions with characters like the Caterpillar, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the Queen of Hearts were quite episodic and I actually found myself losing my way a little bit with what was happening... But it was only afterwards I considered that maybe that was the whole point and that like Alice, the audience also had to work hard to make sense of the bizarrely-beautiful Wonderland on stage....?

Or maybe I'd just had one too many free glasses of wine?

I also really loved the fact that Lewis Carroll was represented as an actual character, guiding Alice through her strange encounters. I found the duets between him and Alice the most moving, beautiful and tender pieces out of the whole show - at one point I felt a little teary? Pretty sure I DEFO sank one too many...

Of course, just like Cinderella, the costumes were once again out of this world! Out of them all I think my favourite was the White Rabbit:

Amazing, no?

After that, those of us that could went for some food, chats and more booze and the banter was truly top notch - I don't wanna sound like a full on sado here but I genuinely felt puuure full of love for everyone I met :) Such a lovely bunch of ladies!

I'll be honest, I was a little nervous as to how it would all go down and I think I maybe came on a wee bit Strong at the beginning - pure gawn up to girls I'd never met, all like, "HIIII I'M KIRSTY FORTY FOUR SUNSETS LOL!" but gradually I calmed down... I think.

Chatting with everyone made me feel dead proud of my blog, and of blogging in general, and having people say nice things about FFS really boosted my confidence. Aw shucks, I felt like I was part of some kind of awesome creative blogging community or something...

God, did you just throw up in your mouth a little bit... You did, right?

Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway, none of this awesome day would have been possible without Ann from Girl in the City Glasgow who organised everything and arranged our AMAZING goody bags which contained, among other things, gin, facial treats, Osis hair goodies, a stunning Thomas Sabo bracelet courtesy of Rox, and vouchers for the spa at Blythswood. Amaze BALLS.

Alice has finished its run in Glasgow now but you can still catch it in Edinburgh, Inverness, Cardiff and Aberdeen. Booking details here. You should absolutely go see it if you can.

Also, if you can't make it along, you can catch the dancers warming up back stage from 7:30pm this Thursday on the Scottish Ballet live streaming site...

Finally, shout out to all the LAYDEEZ:

DRESS UP WITH TOPSHOP & BALLET BANTER

Argh, I'm writing this whilst dying my hair, with one eye on the clock (last time I left it on too long and it was NOT a good look) and the other on Gilmore Girls, so needless to say this is a slightly rushed/haphazard post...

Anyway, I awoke this morning and did my usual routine of checking emails, blogger, twitter and Topshop (in that order) on my iPhone - in the words of Sylvia Plath "what did my hands do before they held you?" - and discovered that Toppers' new range of premium DRESS UP dresses has landed online.

Overall I am impressed with the quality and fashion-forward vibe of the collection, but my loins lust after these two beauties in particular:

Gorgeous, right?

My most favourite skirt in the entire world is from Toppers and is made of the same studded leather this second dress is cut from - would it be stupidly excessive to have BOTH a studded leather skirt AND a studded leather dress...? Nahhhhh!

Ooooh now to some exciting news :) Yesterday I was contacted by an actual newspaper website asking if I wanted to write some articles for them, for actually publication yo, and I've managed to secure my first article for The List aswell...sooooooooo I guess I can now officially call myself a real life journalist! Small potatoes at the moment, perhaps, but next stop TOTAL WORLD DOMINATION! Muhahahaaa!

And if you follow me on Twitter you'll know that tomorrow is the fabulous Scottish Blogger Meetup event at the amazing Blythswood Square Hotel, then onto the Theatre Royal for Scottish Ballet's new spring production, Alice!

You might remember that a while back I wrote about how I went to go see Cinderella and was totally blown away? Well Alice is Scottish Ballet's newest production from the same creative team and choreographer. Needless to say I am super excited for the ballet itself but also for meeting up with the other bloggers who are attending - especially those I have already spoken to online and in real life, but also those I've yet to meet!

There's 21 of us all going in total so too many to name and link to at the moment (my scalp is beginning to tingle - bad sign?) but next time I post I'll make sure to do just that! However, I simply must mention Ann from Girl in the City Glasgow who organised this whole amazing bonanza! Giving her mega SNAPS!

BUT WHAT TO WEARRRRR?
